In which I spill cream soda and tears at the theater...

Took a trip with my family to Asheville today to see War Horse.  I love soda in a glass bottle, so I eagerly twisted open my glass-bottled cream soda, on the floor, just in case. And it bubbled over. Then the movie started.
It's about a horse (no, seriously, I'm not kidding) and his life journey, from the safety of his mother, to bonding with the teenage country boy Albert, to the horrors of the battlefield.  Some of the scenes dragged somewhat, and some had my chest a-flutter and my eyes a-brimmin'.  I left the theater sniffling, and when I went into the bathroom, I saw my puffy eyes.  If you haven't seen War Horse yet, I recommend doing so.  I don't think everyone would like it, but it's difficult to tell whether one will or not.  I found it overall a very touching movie that I probably won't watch again for a while, but that I will most certainly seek out when I feel like a good cry.

There is this one part I have to tell you guys about though.  Albert is trying to enlist when the war starts, and the officer asks for his name. "Albert, sir."  His age? "Nineteen, sir."  Is he being honest? "No, sir."  I was surprised when I didn't hear another guy say, "Better luck next time, eh squirt?"  At least Albert was a touch more convincing than Edmund, as his name ack-chellay WAS Albert.  No typographical errors there.

Hope you guys had a happy first two days of the year.  May the remaining 364 bring you music, art, Narnia, and all manner of things hoped for :)

  1. Oooh, I'm glad War Horse was good. I probably won't get to see it in theaters but I would like to rent it, thanks for the review :) I totally understand about tearing up, it has happened to me a few times now.
That's so funny about the enlisting thing, haha that made me think of Edmund too right when you said his name was Albert lol
And your collage from your previous post is just beautiful. How do you do it? I have never been one for collages, and would love to learn your technique to layering and what not. :)

  2. I forgot to warn you though, there's a girl named Emily and her grandfather and they live in a charming cottage in the countryside. The thing is it's the French countryside, and if my recollections are correct, you don't like the French accent. But other than that, I think you may like it haha.

My layering thing is kinda just the result of some experimentation. I always go around the house talking to myself as I collect my materials to do a collage, and once I told myself to try some tissue paper. Basically, all I do is spread some Mod Podge (a glue-like substance in a jar) on my canvas, and then press on pieces of colored tissue paper and dabble on more mod podge here and there. I usually don't smooth them out, so I can keep the crinkle effect. Then I paint over the tissue paper with watery acrylics and go crazy adding flowers and trinkets and such. Sometimes I even paint over these additions, to help it all come together.

  3. Sweet! So you just throw stuff on there in an artsy flourish? I'll have to try that technique and hope it works. :) Thanks, and I have heard of modge podge, my favorite makeup artist uses it all the time. (I don't know if I've posted about this but on youtube, this girl who is going to college for costume make-up and she is a brilliant artist. Her channel is called Audfaced, and she is amazing, check her out :)
